Maya Boutique Hotel Review
Although Maya is located in a secluded and historic mansion, the place has been refurbished beautifully and embraces a stylish, modern finish. The rooms may have original and stunning ornate detailing above the doors, but the furnishing couldn’t be more modern, with clean-lined four posters, chic dressing tables and generous bathrooms with massive mirrors and large slabs of marble lining the walls. As you would expect, there is air-conditioning as well as ceiling fans and yummy Green Leaf Herbal toiletries.
With just five suites spread between the original house and a stunning new wing, you are guaranteed exclusivity. It is worth noting that the suites in the main building have large modern four posters and modern finishing but retain historic toucher. Suites in the new wing feature private courtyards and larger bathrooms.
The deep blue 20m pool sits in between the old and new wings and is flanked by wave-shaped loungers.
Local highlights include cycle rides through the local village where the head monk at the local temple behind Maya will bestow Buddhist blessings on you, and down lush, luminous green country roads. If you are interested in conservation, you must visit the Turtle Conservation Project where marine turtles hatch their eggs in the sands at night. The hotel the grounds themselves are full of wildlife and you can come here for specific Yoga courses or you can book solo lessons in advance.
Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks including delicious cocktails are served indoors and in the grounds.
You have the option of dining in the main house or dining in the modern, open-sided pavilion that overlooks the garden and beyond. The food is a western-asian mix, with seafood and curries. Meals here are incredible value with a three-course lunch costing just US$20 and dinner costing US$33.
Local Bars & Restaurants
The only bar nearby Maya boutique hotel is the gorgeous Amanwella sea-view bar. Equally gorgeous is the crescent of palm-shaded sand at Amanwella and you can head down there in the day to enjoy their casual Beach Club (offering excellent seafood, burgers and salads), or dine in the evening by their pool.
Expect to leave your stresses behind as you enter the two-acre garden that surrounds this majestic colonial manor house. Whether you are here to find peace with yoga or whether you want to indulge in the local wildlife or beach-life, Maya will help you discover the heart of Sri Lanka.
